On Sept. 21, the Hornets fell to Masconomet 3-1 at home. North Reading fell to 1-4 in the Cape Ann League with that defeat.

“They are powerful everywhere and we had to be on the defensive too much,” said Milone. “We are not getting enough from our offense.”

The Chieftains won the first game, 25-6, and the second, 25-7. The Hornets then stepped up and pulled out the third game, 26-24, before the Chieftains won the fourth game, 25-6.

“They had their bench play in the third game but their coach started inserting their starters in when we hung around and, at the end of the game, their whole starting linup was in but we were still able to win.”

Plavina had seven blocks while senior co-captain Brooke DeGrande had 13 digs, seven assists and two service aces.

On Oct. 1, the Hornets host Ipswich. They then visit Newburyport on Oct. 3. Both of those matches will start at 5:30 p.m.
