NORTH READING – The Northeast Baseball League All-Star Game, postponed due to last Saturday’s rainstorm, will be played this Saturday, July 15, at North Reading High School’s Carey Park. First pitch takes place at 4 p.m.
North Reading is one of nine towns participating in the highly competitive high school-level circuit, joining Billerica, Dracut, Lowell, Lowell Catholic, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro, Westford, and Wilmington.
Representing North Reading in the All-Star Game will be rising seniors Matt Debenedetto, Marco Vittozzi, and Joe Wallace. The strong-armed Debenedetto is the team’s starting catcher; Vittozzi is the squad’s leading hitter and handles second base duties; and Wallace is a hard-throwing starting pitcher who also plays outfield. All three were part of this year’s high school varsity squad that reached the state tournament.
North Reading owns a 5-3-1 mark, most recently topping Lowell Catholic, 11-0, on Monday, and is now unbeaten in its last four games. The Hornets are in second place in the South Division and have three regular-season contests remaining, including home tilts vs. Wilmington (July 16, 6 p.m.) and Billerica (July 18, 6 p.m.). The playoffs start next week.
The squad is coached by Marco Vittozzi, an NRHS grad who also serves as North Reading Little League’s player development director.
