PEABODY — The Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading High co-op girls’ hockey team won its second game in a row last Saturday afternoon as they defeated guest Medford-Malden 3-1 at the McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody.

With that victory, they improved to 4-1 overall.

“It was a good win for us,” said PLNR head coach Michelle Roach. “Medford-Malden has a very good goalie but we were able to get a few behind her.”

The Mustangs scored the first goal of the day with 5:01 left in the opening period.

PLNR then answered with two goals in the second stanza. Lynnfield’s Jen Flynn tied it assisted by fellow Pioneer Hannah Gromko. The eventual game-winning goal came with 54.1 seconds left as Lynnfield’s Chloe Shapleigh found the back of the net assisted by Caroline Burton.

With just over two minutes left in the game, a goal by Catie Kampersal was called off due to goaltender interference. However, Kampersal was able to score on the empty net with 1:10 remaining as the Mustangs pulled their goalie for the extra skater moments after the interference call.

Gromko, a sophomore, picked up her second assist on that tally.

PLNR outshot Medford-Malden, 24-10, on net as Tanner goalie Audrey Buckley made nine stops to improve to 4-1.

On Jan. 20, the Tanners beat host Gloucester, 4-1, at the Talbot Rink

“We had the puck possession most of the time and were able to dominate,” said Roche, as her team never trailed.

Burton scored, unassisted, with 3:23 left for the lone goal of the opening period.

PLNR then broke the game open in the second scoring three times to take a commanding, 4-0, advantage heading into the third.

Paige Thibedeau scored with 12:32 left assisted by Burton and Jenna DiNapoli. Sophomore Chloe Considine (LHS) then scored her first-career goal with 7:56 left to make it 3-0. Kampersal and Ella Chase were both credited with assists.

The fourth goal came with 3:24 remaining as Gromko scored her first-career tally. Kampersal and Flynn assisted.

Buckley, a junior looking for her first shutout of the year, lost it when the Fishermen scored with 4:35 left in the game.

All five goals in the game were even-strength.

PLNR outshot Gloucester, 30-9, on goal as Buckley had eight saves.

“We got a lot of production from different players,” said Roach.

On Jan. 27, the Tanners welcome Newburyport at 5:15 p.m. Two nights later it is the team’s Senior Night as they take on Beverly-Danvers-Ipswich at 5:15 p.m.

Before the game, the five PLNR seniors will be honored allong with the Beverly-Danvers-Ipswich 12th-graders.
