VENICE, Florida – Peter G. (Pete) Tine of Venice, Florida, a native and longtime resident of Wakefield, passed away peacefully at Venice Hospital on January 11. He was 91.
The beloved husband of Joan Connor Tine for 62 years and devoted father of Nancy Tine Shaer and her husband James Shaer of Melrose, Pete is survived by his wife, daughter and brother, Victor Tine and his wife Helen of Hampton, NH. He was the cherished son of the late Salvatore Tine and Maria Penna Tine, dear brother of the late Harold Tine and his wife Rita, Sebastian Tine and his wife Matilda, Gerald Tine and his wife Gerry and Sarah Tine DeFelice and her husband Frank. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pete, a World War II veteran of the Pacific Theatre, attended Wakefield public schools. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during his senior year at Wakefield High School in 1943 upon turning age 18. He subsequently completed his high school education at Phillips Andover Academy and graduated from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT, where he excelled on the football field and was recognized by the Associated Press as a Little All-American honoree in 1951.
After graduating from college he worked for International Harvester in upstate New York before returning to Wakefield to help operate S. Tine and Sons, a longtime family-owned business located on Water Street. He retired from the Shawmut Bank and Trust Company in 1988.
A memorial service at Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield is planned for the spring.
