LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team compiled a 2-1 record last week, improving the Pioneers’ record this season to 6-4-1.

The Pioneers defeated Amesbury 3-0 on Sept. 30.

Senior captain Lexi Yannone scored the Pioneers’ first goal 11 minutes into the first half, assisted by junior forward Liz Reed. The Pioneers played tough defense for the remainder of the first half and took a 1-0 lead at the break.

Reed gave the locals a 2-0 lead after she found the back of the net 11 minutes into the second half. Sophomore Kate Mitchell scored the locals’ final goal off a free kick with seven minutes remaining in the game.

The Pioneers received strong performances from senior forward Emily Lucich, senior midfielder Hannah Scollard and senior defender Haley Iapicca.

“We played very well and did a good job moving the ball,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont.

De-claws Tigers

The Pioneers kept rolling and defeated Ipswich 2-0 in a rain soaked contest Oct. 2.

The first half was a defensive battle between both teams. Sophomore midfielder Sydney Santosuosso broke the stalemate 50 seconds into the second half, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

“It was her first goal of the year for us,” said Vermont. “She has been doing a nice job in the midfield.”

Reed scored the locals’ second goal with 23 minutes remaining in the game.

“It was a nice goal,” said Vermont.

Vermont praised the Pioneers’ performance against the Tigers.

“We battled through tough conditions,” said Vermont. “We did a good job possessing the ball and controlling the game.”

Conquered by Generals

The Pioneers began last week falling 2-1 to Hamilton-Wenham on Sept. 28.

The Generals took an early 1-0 lead eight minutes into the second half. Reed tied the game at one a minute later.

Hamilton Wenham scored the game-winning goal with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

“Hamilton Wenham is a good team that is well coached,” said Vermont. “They are very fast and capitalized on their chances. We had a few chances, but we couldn’t capitalize on them.”
