LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team officially clinched its second straight Cape Ann League Small title last week.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont. “The girls have worked very hard this year and they were excited to win the league title.”

The Pioneers (12-4-2) defeated Rockport 1-0 on Oct. 20.

Junior defender Kelly Look scored the Pioneers’ only goal of the contest 22 minutes into the first half, assisted by sophomore Liz Reed and junior Lexi Yannone.

The Pioneers played tough defense against the Vikings and repeatedly halted Rockport’s scoring chances.

“It was a great night game,” said Vermont. “Rockport is a strong team but we controlled the possession of the game.”

Claws Tigers

The Pioneers defeated Ipswich 4-1 in a wet and wild soaker on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Senior Jess Duhaime scored the Pioneers’ first goal two minutes into the first half. Duhaime scored her second goal of the contest four minutes later after she was set up by senior captain Paige MacEachern.

Ipswich cut the deficit to two after scoring a goal off a free kick nine minutes into the first half.

Duhaime secured a hat-trick two minutes after the Tigers scored, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 lead at the break.

The Pioneers scored its final goal nine minutes into the second half after MacEachern nailed an outside shot from the 18-yard line. Senior captain Emily Scollard was credited with the assist.

“It was a rocket,” Vermont said about MacEachern’s goal.

Vermont praised his squad’s performance against the Tigers.

“It was a little damp and windy but we battled through it,” said Vermont. “I told the girls they couldn’t do anything about the weather and they had a great attitude. We did a good job moving the ball and the turf was great.”

Defeats Wayland

The Pioneers defeated Wayland 2-0 on Oct. 25.

Duhaime scored the Pioneers’ first goal 15 minutes into the first half, assisted by Emily Scollard. Junior midfielder Hannah Scollard scored the locals’ second goal with eight minutes remaining in the first half, assisted by MacEachern.

“Wayland is a tough team who plays in a tough league,” said Vermont. “We did a great job moving the ball. We limited Wayland to only three shots because the defense really stood up.”

CAL All-Stars

Six Pioneers were named CAL All-League players and All-Stars last week.

Emily Scollard was selected as the CAL Small Division Player of the Year. She has scored four goals and dished out seven assists this season.

“Emily is a dominant player who works hard and always puts the team first,” said Vermont. “She has great vision and is a rock in the middle. It’s a well deserving honor.”

In addition to Emily Scollard, MacEachern and Reed were named CAL All-League players. Duhaime, Look and senior defender Abby Petras were named CAL All-Stars.

“They have worked very hard this year,” said Vermont. “Paige has had a great year and Liz is coming into her own. It was nice to see the defenders get the recognition they deserve and Jess has scored some big goals for us.”
