WAKEFIELD — Detectives got a break yesterday in a case involving break-ins at three homes in the past month. They now have a suspect in custody and he will be summonsed to court soon.

The suspect is a 25-year-old man from Wakefield. When he appears in Malden Court, he will face charges of breaking and entering and attempting to break into homes on Wharton Park, Orsini Drive and Butternut Road.

The alleged breaks occurred on Monday, Sept. 22, Sunday, Oct. 12 and Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Police said the break on Orsini Drive was an attempted break-in that was not completed. A bent screw driver was found among the suspect’s possessions.

Wakefield Detectives John Ryan, Christopher Grace, Kenneth Silva and Richard Dinanno had been observing the suspect’s comings and goings and took him into custody this week on an outstanding warrant issued by Lynn District Court.

Police also said jewelry was located in a trash barrel in the suspect’s home and more stolen jewelry belonging to one of the victims was traced to a pawn shop in Lynn.

The Butternut Road break was handled by Patrol Officer John Whaley. The victims told him that while watching television at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 they heard the sound of a door open on the first floor of their home but found nothing unusual when they investigated.

But when they awoke later that morning, the husband went to his first floor office and noticed a briefcase was missing along with other items. Officer Whaley’s investigation led him to the basement of the home where he found a window removed. He also found that a sliding door in an upstairs room had been left unlocked, said police.

Among the other items stolen during the break on Butternut Road were $140 in cash, a golf store gift card valued at $350, an iPhone valued at $700 and a Barnes & Noble Nook $100.

Police spoke to a man at his place of business on Main Street yesterday at about 2 p.m. concerning a recent incident police said was a scam.

The man told police he received a call from someone who said his brother had been involved in an accident and needed money to pay the deductible. The man was asked to wire $350 to a location in Puerto Rico, and he complied.

He later realized the call may have been a scam and police confirmed that it was.

Police are urging people not to respond to these types of calls since the callers are only interested in extracting money from people.
