MELROSE—The Melrose Red Raider tennis team finished another successful season, this time with an appearance in the Div. 2 North quarterfinals on June 7, when they faced defending state champion Winchester (15-3), who topped Melrose 5-0.

Senior captain Jack Mays battled Noah Criss won at first singles, but fell 6-1, 6-1. Jason Jang took on Jasper Tanhk in second singles but lost 6-0, 6-3. In third singles, Sean Donovan plated AJ Simboli and fell 6-1, 6-2. Melrose’s first doubles team of Caleb Zimmerman and Sam Stallings team put up a fight against Matt Fagan and Ramsey Sullivan but came up short. Melrose’s second doubles team of Sean Prendergast and Joe Connolly fell to Grant Andrews and Will Hofheinz won, 6-1, 6-2.

The league champions finish their season at a strong13-5. According to head coach James Williams, Winchester simply had too much depth. “They had way too much fire power and weapons.” He also acknowledges the hard work of his seniors, Joe Connolly, Isaac Bedsole, Frankie DeMayo, Jack Mays, Sean Donovan, Sam Stallings, Liam Singleman and Sean Prendergast over the season. “We’re going to miss these guys, and will have a lot of open spots next year.”
