US Army veteran was passionate about sports

MELROSE — Richard D. Murphy, a cherished resident of Dell Avenue in Melrose for six decades, passed away on August 3, 2024, at the age of 88 at Forestdale Park Senior Living in Malden. Born on December 6, 1935, in Boston, Richard grew up in Charlestown and was a proud member of the Charlestown Schoolboy Association, attending Charlestown High School.

Richard proudly served as an MP in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, where he dedicated himself to his country with honor and valor. After his military service, he returned to Boston and worked as a welder at the Boston Navy Yard. He also worked at companies such as Varian and Komatsu. His work ethic and skills were a testament to his dedication.

After his return from the service he met Claire Riley, and the two were married in 1960, until her passing in 1996.

A lifelong Bruins fan, Richard’s passion for sports was evident in his active involvement with Melrose Pop Warner Football. He spent many years coaching teams, significantly impacting young athletes’ lives. Later, he ran the concession stand during games, continuing his engagement with the Pop Warner community.

Richard is survived by his longtime companion, Margaret Hennigan, and his children: Richard D. Murphy Jr. and his wife Sandra of Brentwood, NH; Timothy W. Murphy and his wife Marion of Reading, MA; Kathleen A. Murphy of Melrose, MA; John M. Murphy and his wife Rebecca of Chelmsford, MA; and James T. Murphy and his wife Rachel of Billerica, MA. He was also a proud grandfather to his nine grandchildren: Richard Murphy III, Patricia Finnemore, Shannon Horan, Colleen Murphy, TJ Murphy, Catie Murphy Saraceno, Jacob Murphy, Claire Murphy and Amelia Murphy. Richard also has 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by dear family friend Kelly Hennigan of Melrose.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Claire (Riley) Murphy, his brother Ronald T. Murphy of Malden, MA, and his parents, Timothy L. Murphy and Angelina (Chiampa) Murphy.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at the Gately Funeral Home, 79. W. Foster Street, Melrose from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 10 a.m. in the Gately Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service in Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St., Melrose. Family & friends respectfully invited to attend.
