Wakefield rallies for 4-2 victory over Melrose

WAKEFIELD — There’s nothing like the Wakefield Memorial High-Melrose High rivalry to bring out the best in both teams. In Saturday’s field hockey game at Beasley Field, it also brought out the offenses of both clubs.

The Warriors scored two goals in the second half as they went on prevail by a 4-2 score to snap their five game winless skein.

Wakefield is now 2-4-1 on the season and earned its second victory of the fall season. The first win came in the opener against Woburn, 3-1.

Each team scored two goals in the first half and the score at halftime was 2-2.

Wakefield got its first two goals of the half at 4:27 and 10:49.

The first goal was scored by junior Julianne Bourque and it came as the result of a rebound in front.

The second Warrior goal was scored by junior Jillian Cataldo with the assist going to senior Olivia McGrath.

Melrose answered each time with two goals at 6:45 and 9:59. Those two tallies came between the Wakefield scores and gave the Red Raiders at 2-1 lead at the time.

The game remained deadlocked at 2-2 until late in the second half when Bourque scored her second goal with 1:04 remaining. Senior tri-captain Meg Mcarthy earned the assist.

Wakefield added an insurance goal with 10 seconds left as Cataldo netted her second score of the contest. The assist was by Kaylyn Stewart, a junior, and the goal came off a corner.

Senior goalie Miriam Wood made nine saves in the cage for the Warriors.

“Wakefield played well today. Our passing game was great. In practice the day before we did a lot of passing and receiving drills and it showed in the game,” said Coach Cara Luca. “This team has so much potential. We have Burlington on Monday and Arlington on Wednesday. (The) Girls need to continue with this level of play and we will be successful against both teams.”

The Warriors will look to make it two wins in a row this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. when they face the Red Devils at Burlington High School’s Varsity Field.
