WAKEFIELD — Police arrested a 28-year-old Richardson Avenue man at about 3:15 p.m. on Friday after a caller reported a shirtless man going into back yards on West Water Street yelling for someone named Elizabeth. The man was located in a back yard by police who said that he appeared disoriented and was digging in the ground for no plausible reason. The man was arrested on a warrant out of West Roxbury District Court.

At about 3:45 a.m. today, a 26-year-old Wakefield man was taken into protective custody and transported to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital after police saw him on walking on Main Street, apparently intoxicated and stumbling in and out of the street. According to police, they stopped to check on the man’s well-being but he refused to identify himself and became agitated with officers.

He was observed to have slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet. Police requested Action Ambulance to check on what appeared to be an injury to the man’s right hand. He was transported to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital but continued to be uncooperative en route and police had to assist ambulance personnel. The man was turned over to security staff it the hospital.

In other business over the weekend:

Police issued a citation in connection with a motor vehicle crash at Main and Greenwood streets at about 2 p.m. on Friday. A 2009 Ford Escape was traveling south on Main Street when a 1998 Nissan Maxima came out of the Greenwood Plaza parking lot and hit the Ford. No injuries were reported. The Fire Department also responded.

Police are investigating an incident of shoplifting that was reported at Walgreen’s Pharmacy at about 3 p.m. on Friday. According to police, Walgreen’s employes saw a woman place candy and greeting cards in a Walgreen’s bag and then leave the store without paying for the items. The woman was described as in her late 30s, about 5 foot 8 inches tall with long black hair. Walgreens staff was also able to describe the gold-colored Kia that the woman reportedly drove away in.

Police responded to an Albion Street address at about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday after a woman reported that her boyfriend had been assaulted. Action ambulance was also notified. Upon arrival of police and EMTs, the man was uncooperative and refused medical treatment. He was given a ride to his residence by police.

At about 10:45 p.m. on Friday, police observed a woman reaching into the clothing donation bin at the Lake Street Laundry. A man was also seen behind the bin with a shopping cart full of clothes. The pair told police that the clothes were theirs and that they had just left the laundromat. Police took their names and sent them on their way.

At about 11 a.m. on Sunday, a Fairmount Avenue resident told police that a tree had fallen on her car. The DPW was called to remove the tree.

At about 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, a caller reported a pair of wild turkeys attacking cars and obstructing the roadway at Prospect and North streets. Police were unable to locate the fowl.

In a busy weekend, The Fire Department responded to 49 calls, 33 of which were for medical aid.

On Friday at about noon, firefighters went to Beebe library on a report of a woman stuck in the elevator. The elevator company was also called and was able to free the woman.

On Friday at about 6:30 p.m. the Wakefield Fire Department covered the Melrose Fire Station for about 30 minutes under mutual aid.

At about 7:40 p.m. on Friday, firefighters were called to the Heron Pond Condominiums at 410 Salem St. for an outdoor gas grill fire. The fire was out on firefighter’s arrival.

At about 6:10 p.m. firefighters went to the Bear Hill Nursing Home where they were able to free a person who had become locked in a closet.

Firefighters also responded to a number of calls over the weekend for accidental or malfunctioning fire and carbon monoxide detectors.
