Finish third and fourth to advance to All-State competition

PITTSFIELD — The Warrior wrestling team had three athletes who placed in the Div. 3 State Meet which was held on Friday and Saturday at Taconic High School in Pittsfield.

Junior Jack Spicer, senior Evan Gourville and Mike Lima were the three Warriors who placed in the meet. Spicer had the best finish of the three with a third place showing in the 113 weight class. Gourville came in fourth at 170 and Lima finished in eighth place at 285.

Also competing for the Warriors, but not scoring a point were freshman Aidan Armstrong and junior Joe Marinaccio.

Wakefield finished 19th overall as a team with 41 points. Wayland captured the Div. 3 state title with 118 points and Norton was second with 89.5 points.

Spicer finished in third place at 113 with a 5-1 record which was one place higher than his fourth place performance at 106 a year ago.

Spicer prevailed by major decision (13-2) over Dedham’s Elian Rivera. The junior lost by fall to Sandwich’s Bryon Hopkins at 1:24.

Spicer rebounded with four straight victories by pin to take third place overall at 113. The junior took down Norton’s Cam Vataralo at 36 seconds. He then defeated Sabis’ Christian Gascias-Nieves at 2:51. Spicer beat Georgetown/Ipswich’s Josiah Krason at 3:10. Spicer pinned Saugus’ Mike Titus at 3:36 in his final bout.

Gourville posted a 4-2 record at 170 and placed fourth.

The senior pinned Watertown’s Parsa Medhati at 3:04, but then dropped a 3-0 decision to Sabis’ Kolby Smith.

Gourville rebounded with three wins by decision. He defeated Norton’s Kyle Pereira by a 9-3 tally. The senior then pulled out a 4-2 overtime triumph over Tyngsboro’s Jack Wagner. Gourville’s final victory was by a 10-7 score over Bedford’s Dan Greaney.

In his final bout, Gourville lost by technical fall (15-0) to Somerset’s Mitch Prario for his fourth place finish.

Lima posted a 2-3 record at the 285 weight class for his eighth place finish.

The senior lost by fall to Advanced Science and Math Academy’s Mason Bradford at 5:36. Lima then pinned Rockland’s Alex Freeman at 2:52. Lima then scored a 10-3 decision over Hamden Charter’s Joe Ehali.

The senior then lost by major decision (12-2) to Franklin County Tech’s Kane Rich and by fall to Bristol/Plymouth’s Joe Pupek at 3:43 to secure an eighth place showing.

Armstrong and Marinaccio both went 0-2 in the meet to have their fine seasons come to an end.

Armstrong competed at the 106 weight class. He lost by fall to both Norton’s Andy Murphy and Monument Mountain’s Max Buffoni with both times being 1:14.

Marinaccio wrestled at 160. The junior lost by fall to Hampshire Regional’s Brandon Weyant at 1:28. He then by technical fall (22-7) to Bellingham’s Jeremy Rubin.

Two Warriors will be advancing to the All-State Meet this weekend at Reading Memorial High School. Spicer will be wrestling in the All-State Meet for the second year in a row, this time at 113. Gourville will also wrestle this weekend when he competes in the 170 weight class.

Spicer’s first round match is against Sharon’s Yosef Ellis-Rech. Ellis-Rech placed third in the Div. 2 State Meet this past weekend.

Gourville’s first round match is against Methuen’s Travis Manick. Manick came in second in the Div. 1 State Meet this past weekend.

Friday’s first round matches begin at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday’s contests begin at 10 a.m.
