ObitHowe-webREADING — Stanley E. Howe, 89, of Reading, formerly of Wakefield and Melrose, died Wednesday, June 24 at the Bear Hill Nursing Center.

Born in Melrose on November 14, 1925, he was the son of the late Eugene S. and Ruth G. (Turpin) Howe.

Stan was raised in Melrose and was a graduate of Melrose High School, Class of 1943. He served in the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army during World War II. He later received his associate’s degree from Northeastern University in Electronic Engineering in 1955.

He had worked for many years and later retired from Alpha Industries in Woburn in 1990.

Stan was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church of Wakefield. He enjoyed downhill skiing, biking, roller skating, square dancing, playing tennis and photography. Stan was the quintessential “jack of all trades”. He enjoyed spending time at the cottage in Harrison, Maine where he and his family had been summer residents since 1965.

He was a life member of the I.E.E.E, a member of the National Association of The Tenth Mountain Division, U.S. Army, and a member of the Historical Society of Wakefield and Harrison ME.

On July 5, 1947 Stan married Margaret G. Mack. They were married for 66 years until Marge’s passing in 2013. He was the loving father of Janice L. Nute of Westborough, Susan J. Howe and husband Richard Pepin of ME., Judith E. Howe and husband Arthur Fry of CO. He was the devoted grandfather of Michael, David, Jeremy, Peter and Dorothy Nute. He was predeceased by his sister Nancy Smith.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 11, in the First Baptist Church, 8 Lafayette St., Wakefield at 11am. All are welcome to attend the reception downstairs immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Stan’s memory to the First Baptist Church of Wakefield or to the Audubon Society of Massachusetts.
