AUGUSTA, Maine — Stephen Lloyd Bishop, 87, of Augusta, Maine and Reading, Mass., died Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the Alfond Center of Health in Augusta.

He was born in Wakefield, Mass. on February 14, 1931, the son of Harry and Mildred (Mellett) Bishop.

Steve attended Wakefield area schools and graduated from Wakefield High School. He later graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 1953 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, and received his Masters of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Tufts University in 1970.

In 1987, Mr. Bishop was appointed Senior Vice President with Metcalf & Eddy and was their national technology leader in waterworks. Since joining them in 1953, he managed projects in all technical areas of the waterworks field. He received several prestigious awards including the Dexter Brackett Memorial Award in 1971 and 1981 from the New England Water Works Association and the Abel Wolman Award of Excellence from the American Water Works Association. He also received the George Warren Fuller award in 1984.

Steve specialized in the conceptual and detail design of water treatment plants and transmission and distribution systems, as well as studies for water resources master plans. He also had extensive experience in piloting and design of rapid gravity filters. He traveled extensively throughout the world improving water quality for everyone.

He was predeceased by his first wife Dorothy Todd Bishop; his sisters Lois Drinon and her husband William; Beverly J. Bishop, and Doris Ruffo and her husband Henry; an aunt Gertrude Mellett and an uncle Alfred Mellett. He has established the Dorothy Ann Todd Bishop Memorial Fund through Tufts University School of Medicine for Cancer Research, and helped establish the Alfred H. Mellett Scholarship Fund in 2017.

He is survived by his wife Jane Packard Laurin Bishop of Augusta; nieces Christine Carter and her husband Robert Schweizer; Elaine Stonkos; Heather Fletcher and her husband, and Robin Gayle Fletcher.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, Maine followed by a reception at the Green Street United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield, Mass.
