LYNN — In their regular season meeting, the Lynnfield High girls’ soccer team tied Hamilton-Wenham, 2-2. On Monday evening, the two teams played again, this time in the MIAA Division 4 state semifinals at Manning Field in Lynn on an unseasonably mild evening.
This time, the Pioneers were shut out 3-0 to end their outstanding season.
With the defeat, 3rd-seeded Lynnfield ended the year at 16-4-2. Meanwhile, the 2nd-seeded Generals improved to 18-0-4 as they will play for the state title on Nov. 23 at Curry College in Milton.
“They played us really hard,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont. “They got to all of the 50-50 balls and played good defense.”
Madeline Ciaramitaro, Tessa Hunt and Georgia Wilson scored the Generals’ goals.
Ciaramitaro scored the first goal in the 25th minute on a rebound off the crossbar in the first half as Hamilton-Wenham went to the half up 1-0.
In the 16th minute of the second stanza, Hunt scored on a cross from Wilson at the near post to make it 2-0.
Wilson had the final goal of the night in the game’s 73rd minute off a corner kick with a high shot that just got over the hands of Lynnfield’s sophomore goalie Victoria Minor. Minor finished with nine saves.
“Victoria made some big saves,” said Vermont, as her best stop came on a breakaway from Wilson in the first half.
Vermont felt his team’s chances got less as the game went along.
“We had some good opportunities in the first half but didn’t make the right adjustments in the second half,” pointed out Vermont.
Generals’ goalkeeper, Sasha Makogonov, had three saves.
Hamilton-Wenham also avenged a 4-0 loss to the Pioneers in the quarterfinals last season.
In this year’s quarterfinals on Nov. 13, the Pioneers blanked Tyngsboro, 3-0, at home.
Senior captain Emma Rose had the first goal in the seventh minute assisted by senior captain Bella Carroll and junior Bella Sykes.
Carroll netted the Pioneers’ second goal on a header from Rose in the game’s 67th minute.
The final goal came less than four minutes later as sophomore Ava Damiani scored assisted by sophomore Giada Antidormi and Carroll.
Minor made three saves in posting the shutout.
“We showed great energy and moved the ball well,” said Vermont “We were also able to finish.”
Lynnfield controlled the territorial play.
“Their goalie (Mia Dragoumanos) was outstanding and kept them in the game,” said Vermont, as she made 11 stops.
