WAKEFIELD — Senior three-sport Warrior athlete Tighe Beck recently signed his letter of intent to attend Assumption College next year to play football.

Beck officially signed the letter of intent on Feb. 3 on National Letter of Intent Day. The senior formally signed his letter at Wakefield Memorial High School with members of his family, his football coach and school administrators on hand.

Beck made it official with his parents, Peter Beck and Bernadette Farrell, in attendance. Also Warrior football head coach Steve Cummings; Brendan Kent, K-12 Director of Athletics, Health, and Wellness for the Wakefield Public Schools; and WMHS Principal Richard Metropolis were on hand as well.

Beck was one of Wakefield’s top players on the football field playing wide receiver and at defensive back.

The senior made 30 receptions for 452 yards during the fall season. His long was a 70 yard TD reception for Wakefield’s only score in the Thanksgiving Day Classic against Melrose.

Beck also carried the ball nine times for 35 yards.

On defense, Beck made 45 plus tackles and did so despite missing a couple of games due to injury.

Beck was also named a Middlesex League Freedom division all-star on defense.

In addition to football, the senior plays basketball and baseball as well. Beck is a forward for the two-time Middlesex League Freedom division champion boys’ basketball team and was an outfielder for the league championship baseball team last spring.

In basketball, Beck was just named the MVP of the M.L. Freedom division and is a first team league all-star.

Assumption College posted an 11-2 overall record a year ago and was 8-1 in the Northeast-10 conference in football.

Last fall, the Greyounds won the Northeast-10 Championship by a 17-14 score over New Haven (Conn.). In the NCAA Div. II championship, Assumption outscored Bowie State (Md.) by a 51-29 score before being edged at Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania in the second round, 41-39.

Bob Chesney completed his third season as the Assumption College football head coach in 2015 after being named to the position on Feb. 5, 2013. The Greyhounds’ program has shown progress in each of three seasons he has been on the sideline.

In 2014, Chesney guided the Hounds to the program’s first seven-win season in 20 years as the team finished 7-4 and in third place in the Northeast-10 standings.

In his first full season as head coach of Assumption football, Chesney directed the Hounds to a 6-5 overall mark, just the sixth winning season in program history as the Hounds earned the number four seed in the Northeast-10 Championship Weekend.
