Three Melrose athletes crowned league champs

MELROSE — Members of the Melrose High School girls’ and boys’ outdoor track teams rose to the occasion on Tuesday at Regis College when they competed in the 2015 Middlesex League Meet. The competition is stiff against the 12 league teams but Melrose prevailed in a number of events, crowning two league champs.

Anne Morrison, Maddie Oro and Shaylyn McCarthy topped some of the toughest opponents in the state and were crowned champs in their events. Morrison became the league champion in the long jump with a reach of 16-11.25. She also placed fourth in the 100 dash. Oro continued her stellar high jump career by clinching the league title in the event with a jump of 5′.04, and Shaylyn McCarthy is the league champ in the shot put with a throw of 30-02 and took the silver in the discus at 94-01. Other top finishes included Elizabeth Hirsch, third in the 2 mile, Haley Moss (4th in high jump), Gabby Smith (5th in discus). Melrose finished an admirable 5th overall.

On the boy’s side Melrose senior Will Caffey had a first rate day for Melrose with a silver medal performance in the long jump and a bronze medal in the 200 meter dash. Kevin Wheelock earned a bronze in the 1 mile with a time of while Adam Cook medaled in the 2 mile with a 5th place finish at 10:06.25. Teammate Rob Hanlon placed 9th in the event at 10:20.54. Jaret Botelho medaled in the shot put with a throw of 40.06.50, good enough for 7th. He also placed 8th in the discus, while his teammate Chris Devir came in 7th in that event with a throw of 111-00.

Melrose’s relay teams proved their mettle with the 4×800 relay team of Griffin Barris, Adam Cook, Rob Hanlon and Sean Conlan medaling in 4th with a time of 8.38.18. Melrose’s 4×100 relay team of Tim Zhang, Will Brincheiro, Will Caffey and Jay Tyler also medaled in a 4th place finish at 45.00.

On May 31 both teams will compete at the Div. 3 State Meet at Durfee High.
