U.S. Naval aviator during WWII, worked as an attorney

LYNNFIELD — John Robert Gilbertson, Sr., 89, a long time, active resident of Lynnfield, died peacefully on May 2, 2017.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elaine, and their children, John Jr. and his wife Kaoru of Boston, Matthew and his wife Deborah of Lynnfield, Carla and her husband Greg of McLean, Virginia, and Christina of West Newbury. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren.
He graduated early from Roslindale High School to enlist during World War II and became a U.S. Naval aviator. After the war, he graduated from Duke University and Boston University School of Law. He was an active member of the Boston-area legal community for over 50 years as well as a member of a law firm with his father-in-law, Alfred A. Sartorelli, in Stoneham, and as a solo practitioner.
His funeral was held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave. Wakefield on Saturday, May 6. Visitation for relatives and friends was held at the funeral home on Friday, May 5. Interment took place at Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham.
