HAVERHILL — The red-hot North Reading High boys’ hockey team stayed undefeated last Saturday afternoon as they blanked host Masconomet, 5-0, at the Valley Forum in Haverhill With that victory, the Hornets improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Cape Ann League.

The Hornets scored three times in the first period and added single goals in the second and third periods. Kevin Murphy led the way with four points as he had a power-play goal and three assists.

The Hornets became the only undefeated and untied team in all of Division 2 ice hockey in the state by shutting out the Chieftains.

“He was all over the ice,” said Hornets head coach John Giuliotti, about the junior. “He played a superb game.”

Matt Corrieri, Mike Finnochiaro and John Stringer had the three other goals.

Goalie John Day improved to 7-0 in net as he posted his third shutout of the year. North Reading outshot the Chieftains on net, 31-21.

With that win, the Hornets became the only undefeated, untied team in all of Division 2 in the state.

Down Pioneers

On Jan. 4, the Hornets beat guest Lynnfield, 3-1, at Kasabuski Rink in Saugus.

“It was a great win against our rivals,” said Giuliotti. “We showed a lot of character after we got down.”

After a scoreless first period, the Pioneers stuck first in the second period and went to the third leading 1-0. However, the Hornets erupted for three third-period goals to pull out the win.

Pat Scanlon scored 3:46 in while Corrieri gave the locals the lead for good with 5:34 left in the game.

Jack Schille then closed the door scoring with 1:07 remaining.

The Hornets outshot Lynnfield on goal, 25-21, as Day made 20 stops.

North Reading Pride Day Sat.

This coming Saturday afternoon, it is North Reading Pride Day at their home rink, the Kasabuski Arena in Saugus, as the Hornets face Triton. Kids with their North Reading shirts will be admitted for free. There will also be a 50-50 raffle and a chuck a puck.

Face-off is at 4:30 pm.
