WAKEFIELD — A 23-year-old Melrose woman was arrested at about 1:45 a.m. today after police stopped the Dodge Charger that she was driving for speeding on Lowell Street and discovered that her driver’s license was suspended.

Police said that Soraya Taghi was traveling west on Lowell Street at about 50 mph in a 30 mph zone when she was stopped near Magnolia Terrace. A registry check revealed that her license to drive was suspended and she had an active warrant out of Peabody District Court. She was taken into custody and was bailed out later this morning.

A 37-year-old Wakefield man will be summonsed to court for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle following a fender bender in the parking lot of Dunkin’ Donuts on Salem Street at about 9:15 a.m. yesterday. Police said that after driving his 2002 Ford truck into the parking lot, the man pulled into a parking space. When he backed the truck up in an attempt to pull into the space straight, the truck hit a car driven by a 43-year-old Georgetown woman, who called police to report the accident. When police arrived, they determined that the truck driver did not have a driver’s license. There were no injuries and neither vehicle was towed.

Details were sketchy concerning a report of a male firing a slingshot at houses and people in the Peasant Street area at about 7:30 p.m. yesterday. Police are investigating and a summons is expected to be issued.

A 63-year-old man was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital just after 9 p.m. yesterday after an apparent drug overdose. The man was discovered in a doorway motionless and with a weak pulse. Police also found  a clear plastic bag containing a powdery substance. Police and Action Ambulance paramedics administered multiple doses of Narcan before the man was taken to the hospital.

Police received multiple 911 hangup calls from a home on Teal Road around 1 a.m. today. The Fire Department was able to gain entry to the locked residence and determine that no one was home and there was no emergency.

No details were available regarding a minor car crash on Salem Street at about 6:45 this morning.

The Fire Department responded to 10 calls yesterday, six of which were for medical aid.

At 7:20 a.m. today, firefighters went to Hopkins Street to extinguish yet another mulch fire.
