WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Independence Day Parade Committee is pleased to announce that the theme of the 2015 Independence Day Parade is “Foundation of Democracy – America’s Volunteers”

This theme celebrates the men and women who volunteered their time, skills, blood, sweat and tears to establish an independent nation. It also honors those who continue to selflessly give of their time and skills to make our community a better place to live.

In order to further celebrate those volunteers, the Parade Committee is sponsoring an essay contest to select the Grand Marshal for the 2015 Independence Day Parade. Nominees can include elected officials, members of the military, students who help at local organizations and people who volunteer with local clubs and charities.

Entrants should submit an essay, by March 15, supporting their choice for Grand Marshall. Each entry should describe the volunteer activities of the subject and contain the name and contact information of the writer.

Entries can be mailed to the Wakefield Independence Day Parade Committee at P.O. Box 1746, Wakefield MA 01880 or e-mailed to Info@JulyParade.org.

Entries will be read and voted on by the Independence Day Committee Board of Directors. The winning entry will be announced at the end of March. The subject of the winning essay will be invited to be the Grand Marshal of the parade. Prizes will be awarded to the top four entrants.
