A devoted father who was an avid sports fan

WAKEFIELD — Michael “Digger” Lucey Sr., 54, a lifelong resident of Wakefield passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 9.

He was born on March 22, 1968 and was the son of the late Paul and Jean (Niland) Lucey.

Michael was a graduate of Northeast Regional Vocational School. He was a longtime employee of the Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light Department and the town’s favorite plumber.

Michael loved to travel – when feeling ambitious, he traveled across town lines to Reading to enjoy a quiet night with a slice of Café Capri pizza (or a singular meatball). You could often find him “never feeling better” with his friends at the West Side Social Club. Michael was an avid sports fan. As a season ticket holder, he loved attending the Red Sox opening day games and Patriots games down at Gillette Stadium. He was widely recognized as the greatest Men’s B-League Softball catcher of his time.

Above all, Michael’s greatest love was for his family. As a devoted father, his legacy and kind spirit will live on through his children.

Michael was the beloved father of Meghan, Erin, and Michael Lucey Jr. He was the brother of Shelia Lucey of Nantucket, Paul Lucey and wife Anne, Thomas Lucey and wife Teresa, Meg DeFeo and husband Scott all of Wakefield, Mark Lucey and wife Kristina of Marshfield, and the late Patrick Lucey. Michael was also the beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews and a great friend, well-known to everyone in town.

Michael’s funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield. There will be no visiting hours. Services are in the care of the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield.
