WAKEFIELD — The Varsity Division Wakefield Townies took care of business against Wilmington in the first round of the Northeast Baseball League playoffs last night, shutting out the visiting Wildcats 7-0 at Sullivan Park.
With that victory, the Townies will move onto the Northeast Varsity South Division Finals where they will take on familiar foe North Reading in a best of three series.
The Townies finished the regular season at 7-4, just one game back of North Reading who went 8-3. The Hornets beat Wakefield 4-0 on Thursday, which all but sealed their No. 1 seed and forced the Townies to take on No. 3 Wilmington in a playoff matchup.
After last night’s dominant victory, the Townies will travel back to Carey Park at North Reading High tomorrow at 5:45 p.m. for Game 1. Game 2 will take place in Wakefield on Thursday and if necessary, Game 3 will be in North Reading on Friday night. The locations and times of Games 2 and 3 have yet to be announced.
Wakefield won the season series against the Hornets. The Townies won the first two games before North Reading’s win last week. Wakefield was victorious 12-1 on June 27 and 3-2 on July 1.
Full stories of Games 1 and 2 will appear later this week.
