WAKEFIELD — Next week is kick-off week for the 2024 fall sports season at Wakefield High. 

The regular seasons will start after Labor Day. 

Wakefield golf was the first team to get going, starting their regular season with two huge wins over Lexington on Monday and Melrose on Tuesday. A full story appeared in yesterday’s sports section. The Warriors will try for 3-0 today at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to Belmont Country Club to take on the Marauders. They travel to Woburn on Tuesday.

The rest of the fall sports — aside from girls’ swimming and cross country — will start next week. The girls’ and boys’ cross country teams will start on Sept. 10 in Lexington while the girls’ swim team will start with a tri-meet against Burlington and Woburn on Sept. 17.

On Tuesday, the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams will kick off their seasons. The girls’ will host the Spy Ponders at the Galvin’s Walton Field while the boys’ will travel to Arlington. Both games start at 4:15 p.m. The boys’ beat Arlington 2-0 last year while the girls’ fell, 4-1. 

Volleyball 2024 Preview

The girls’ soccer team will have a new head coach this year as Nico Manganiello takes over. 

The boys’ soccer team is coming off an incredible run to the Div. 2 state championship game where they fell 1-0 in overtime to Oliver Ames. 

The field hockey and volleyball teams will start it up on Wednesday as they will both host Arlington, the field hockey game will be 4:15 p.m. at Landrigan while the volleyball game will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Charbonneau Field House. 

The field hockey team went 6-10-2 last year and is looking to get back to the playoffs.

The volleyball Warriors are coming off an historic season, making it to the Div. 3 Final Four for the first time in program history. They fell to eventual champion Weston, 3-1 in the semifinals. The Warriors went 16-8 overall.

The football team starts their regular season on Friday, Sept. 6, 6 p.m. at Greater Lawrence Tech. Wakefield went 8-3 overall last year, just missing the playoffs. They won their third straight Thanksgiving Day game with a 7-3 victory over Melrose. 

Wakefield topped Greater Lawrence 17-7 last year.
