MELROSE — The Melrose Red Raider wrestling team certainly had the talent to beat rival Wakefield on Wednesday, Jan. 13, when they hosted the Warriors at the Melrose Marcoux Gym. They just didn’t have the bodies. The result was a hard fought 44-30 loss. Melrose had to surrender three forfeits in the 106, 113 and 120 classes, thus giving up 18 points and allowing the Warriors to steal a victory a decisive M.L. clash.

And while Melrose didn’t have every weight class filled, they made the most with their competitors, edging the Warriors (8-3-0) in the last stretch of the meet but not enough for win. Still the Raiders took some key victories, including an impressive stand by freshman Steven MacIntosh, an experienced youth wrestler enjoying a strong debut on varsity, who battled in the 126 class and pinned Warrior senior Evan McGuire at 4:17.

In the 138 class Melrose enjoyed a big win by Mandip Singh, who beat Ryan Smith, 11-4, by decision. Melrose continued the wins with Cam Rosie earning a 9-5 decision over Wakefield’s Ben Pierce in the 152 class and Red Raider Patrick Whelan pinned opponent Mike Yirrell in the 182 class at 3:07. Melrose’s winning streak continued as Antonio DiFronzo (195) pinned Derek DiMascio at 1:40 and Colin Casey pinned Aiden Coleman at 4:30 in the 220 lb. class.

Melrose is scheduled to host a tri-meet on Saturday (weather permitting) against Lexington and Belmont on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
