WATERTOWN — The Wakefield High softball team hit the road on Monday to face Freedom Division opponent Watertown.

The Warriors put together a strong game in all facets, leaving town with a convincing 13-0 victory while improving their record to 5-3 on the season.

“It was a good team win for us,” said head coach Chris Tolios.”We started early and kept the bats going right until the end.”

That offense, which has now accounted for 68 runs in their first eight games, was led by junior and reigning Freedom Division MVP Paige Butland who went 3-for-4 with a home run and five runs batted in.

Senior captain Claire Donahue also had a strong game going 3-for-3.

Senior captain Nora Leach had another lights out pitching performance, scattering just three hits to earn the shutout.

Behind Leach, the defense was alert and efficient.

“We played a clean game in the field which is always good to see,” said Tolios.

It was a great way for Wakefield to bounce back after dropping their last two games against Woburn on April 18 (9-3 final) and Burlington on Friday (6-2 final) – two of the best teams in the Middlesex League.

Watertown has just one win this season, but it was a one-run victory over a quality Melrose team, so Wakefield knew they had to lock in on Monday.

“Watertown is a scrappy team that can give you trouble so I was proud of the girls for their focus and staying the course throughout the game,” said Tolios.

The Warriors will travel to Belmont today at 4 p.m. to meet a 1-8 Marauders team. Wakefield will return home tomorrow at 4 p.m. to host Winchester (2-7).
