WAKEFIELD — The Warrior football team started off slowly in its third scrimmage but finished strong as it had a good showing against Beverly last Friday night at Landrigan Field.
Wakefield surrendered two first quarter touchdowns to the Panthers and fell behind out of the gate.
But the Warriors rallied for two TDs in the second quarter. The first score came from a 5 yard touchdown pass by senior QB Will Bergendahl to senior tight end Dylan Brady. The second touchdown came on a one yard run by senior running back Luke Martin.
Wakefield went ahead in the third quarter as the defense got a score. Paul McGunigle, a junior linebacker, returned a fumble 40 yards for the go ahead TD.
The Warriors added one more touchdown in the fourth quarter. Sophomore QB Kobey Nadeau threw a 27 yard TD pass to sophomore running back Carmen Sorrentino.
Head Coach Mike Boyages felt it was a successful scrimmage.
“I thought the team showed significant improvement from our prior scrimmage. We’re looking to take another step on Thursday in our final scrimmage against Bishop Fenwick.”
The Warriors host the Crusaders tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in their final preseason scrimmage. Wakefield scrimmaged Northeast Metro Tech and Methuen before its scrimmage against Beverly. The Warriors showed improvement from scrimmage to scrimmage which is what Boyages and his coaching staff are looking for.
Wakefield opens up the regular season on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Lexington at Landrigan Field.
