Wakefield goes 28-10 overall

NORTH READING — The WMHS wrestling team traveled down Haverhill Street to North Reading High School on Saturday, Dec. 23 for a quad meet against North Reading/Lynnfield, Malden Catholic and Marblehead/Swampscott. In the end, it was a dominating performance against each team as the Warriors finished the meet with an overall individual match record of 28-10.

Wakefield beat Malden Catholic to start the meet, 48-23. The Warriors picked up pins from senior co-captains Jake Goodchild (1:36 pin, 145 lbs.), Aiden Coleman (:46 pin, 195 lbs.), and Kevin Tran (4:10 pin, 170 lbs.).

The Warriors also got wins from Anselm Schools (:45 pin, 106 lbs.), Jameson O’Callahan (forf.), Aidan Armstrong (1:06 pin, 126 lbs.), Jimmy Grover (11-6 dec., 160 lbs.), Steve Mercurio (1:30 pin, 182 lbs.) and Derek DiMascio (5-3 dec., 285 lbs.).

Against Marblehead/Swampscott, the Warriors put themselves in position to win the meet with an impressive 57-9 victory.

Luke Fitzgerald picked up the first win with a 12-6 decision at 113 lbs, followed by Armstrong (:58 pin, 126 lbs.), Luke Hopkins (:48 pin, 132 lbs.), Brock Johnson (4:47 pin, 138 lbs.), Matt Cunningham (2:54 pin, 145 lbs.), Goodchild (:55 pin, 152 lbs.), Grover (1:12 pin, 160 lbs.), Tran (3:36 pin, 170 lbs.), Robbie Fossett (3:42 pin, 182 lbs.) and Schools (1:13 pin, 106 lbs.).

Against North Reading/Lynnfield the Warriors got forfeit wins for Armstrong, Johnson and Coleman to help set the tone for another big 54-24 win.

Goodchild kept his spectacular season going with a 15-0 technical fall at 145 lbs. to bring his individual record to 3-0 on the day. Cunningham followed that up with an 8-6 decision at 152 lbs. Tran picked up his third pin of the day, this time pulling it off in 1:05. DiMascio won on a 12-4 major decision to go 2-0 while Fitzgerald (1:50 pin) and Schools (1:15 pin) each went undefeated.

The Warriors ultimately got perfect records from Schools (3-0), Armstrong (3-0), Goodchild (3-0), Grover (2-0), Tran (3-0), Coleman (2-0), DiMascio (2-0), Johnson (2-0) and Fossett (1-0).

The Warriors sent nine wrestlers to the Lowell Holiday Tournament taking place yesterday and today and will travel to Woburn tomorrow morning for an individual meet against the Tanners. Results will be posted next week.
