Warriors have fifth place showing with many good performances
BELMONT — Seniors Dan Wensley and Alex Kane have shown that they are among the best wrestlers ever at Wakefield Memorial High School. The two captains keep adding to their resumes as they captured first places in their respective weight classes at the Belmont Tournament which was held Saturday at Belmont High School.
Wensley was crowned the 195 champ while Kane was the winner at the 220 weight class. They were just two of seven place winners in the meet and they helped Wakefield to a fifth place finish overall in the team scoring with 121 points.
Arlington won the tournament and Needham came in second.
Wensley went 3-0 at 195 and won all of his matches by pin. Wensley defeated Newton North’s Liam McDade at 39 seconds. The senior then took down Catholic Memorial’s Joe Smith at 1:44. In the final, Wensley won by fall over Scituate’s Noah Butcher at 3:08 to take first place.
Kane also posted a 3-0 record at 220 and won two of his contests by pin. Kane pinned Newton North’s Emmanuel Thompson at 1:20 and then defeated Needham’s Will Burke at 3:31. In the final, Kane pulled out a 3-2 decision in three overtimes against Woburn’s Dan Meaney for the first place finish.
Both Kane and Wensley also are closing in the all-time wins record at WMHS. Kane has 130 career victories and Wensley has 125. The current record holder is Dylan Conn with 139.
Wakefield also had a second place finisher in the tourney and that came from sophomore Jack Spicer at the 106 weight class. Spicer pinned both Masconomet’s John Dindo and Needham’s Adam Kates at 1:24 and 1:39 to earn a berth in the final. In the title bout, Spicer dropped a 7-2 decision to Arlington’s Matt Pickett.
The other three place winners were senior Matt Yirrell at 182, senior Nick Murphy at 285, junior Evan Gourville at 160 and junior Evan McGuire at 120. Yirrell and Murphy posted third place finishes.
Gourville earned a fifth place finish and McGuire had a sixth place showing.
Also competing in the meet were senior tri-captain Ryan Cunningham, junior Shannon Drager and senior Dan Bertini. Cunningham went 1-2 at the 170 weight class. Drager and Bertino both posted 0-2 records at 113 and 152.
The Warriors host Burlington in a dual meet tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Charbonneau Field House.
