MELROSE — Melrose High School has crowned another State Champion.

Kevin Wheelock, a sophomore, took home the Div. 3 State Title in the two mile race on Wednesday, June 3 at Durfee High School, outpacing his opponents with an impressive time of 9:36.37, a good five seconds ahead of nearest opponent Mike Famiglietti of Tewksbury.

“Kevin is a worker,” says his proud coach Tim Morris. “He was a league All Star in the mile and ran that race all season for us to give the team the best chance for success. Yet he’s even stronger in the longer race.” Morris coaches Wheelock along with Jim Bleiler, who trains the mid to long distance athletes on the team.

It’s been a very successful season for Wheelock, who has earned top spots over the year in both indoor and outdoor track and cross country. With the championship, the sophomore advanced to All-States over the weekend, after only two days of rest, where he finished 12th with a time of 9:46.

It’s clear that the sky is the limit for this distance runner and cross country standout. There’s no telling how much more hardware he will earn as he continues his high school career.

Predicts his coach, “He’ll keep working, Kevin is a sophomore who has a bright future ahead of him.”
