U.S. Army veteran had local survivors

SAUGUS — William Clifford Swartz, formerly of Dorchester, passed away Jan. 22 after a lengthy illness.

Born and raised in Boston’s Dorchester section, he attended schools in the Boston area. He entered the U.S. Army in November of 1958, serving until January of 1962, during the beginning of the Vietnam era. Most of his working career he was as a heavy equipment operator, up to and including the time of the “Big Dig.” He was a Saugus resident for 20 years. He was a member of the Quincy Knights of Columbus and the Malden Moose.

William was the devoted father of Michelle L. Cardinale and her husband Craig of Saugus, Lisa M. Settipane and her husband Richard Settipane Jr. of North Reading and Joseph “Joey” James of North Reading. He was the cherished grandfather of Louis, Nicholas and Ava Cardinale, all of Saugus and Paolo, Richard and Lorenzo Settipane, all of North Reading. He was the dear brother of Steven and Mildred Swartz and the late Helena Prisco. He is also lovingly survived by his former wife, Shirley R. (Capizzi) Anderson of Revere and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends attended visiting hours on Thursday, Jan. 28 at the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, in Revere. His funeral service was conducted in the funeral home, followed by interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield. Remembrances may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
