carney-webPEABODY — William T. Carey passed away at the age of 89 surrounded by his loving family on April 21.

Born in Winthrop to William A. and Mary R. (Farley) Carey, Bill was raised in Winchester and graduated from Winchester High School. He served three years in the U.S. Army and earned a degree in Economics from Boston College. He married Mary V. Mahoney in 1952. They raised their family of six children, settling in Wakefield in 1966.

Bill had a successful 36-year career at Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, retiring at the age of 60. He moved to Cape Cod where he and Mary spent 18 years making and selling crafts locally and in art fairs. He loved Dixieland jazz music, model trains and spending time with his family and friends.

Bill spent his final years at Brooksby Village in Peabody where he was a volunteer at the TV station, an active member of the church, and enjoyed delivering mail to his community of friends.

Bill was the beloved husband of 64 years to Mary V. (Mahoney) Carey of Brooksby Village, Peabody. He was the loving father to Denise Appleman (Jay) of Palm Harbor, Fla., Ruthann Strong (Charles) of Townsend, Janet Robichaud (William) of Reading, Joan Hall (Donn) of Bloomington, Ind., Brian Carey (Lisa) of Belmont and the late John W. Carey of Wakefield. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Tuesday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 o’clock. Interment to follow at Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8 p.m.
