Event is for boys and girls, ages 9 to 14

WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Knights of Columbus, Council #104, invites all boys and girls, ages 9-14, to participate in the local level of competition for the 2015 Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge. The local competition will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Moulton Playground. Registration will start at 1:15 p.m.
The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters in New Haven, Conn., based on scores from the state-level competitions.
All boys and girls 9-14 are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age (age as of Sept. 1 and written parental consent.

At the local level each participant will get three practice penalty kicks and then 15 penalty kicks from 12 yards. The goal will be sectioned off with kicks in the center worth five points, both lower corners are 10 points, and the upper corners are 20 points. The highest total score will be the winner in each age bracket (boys and girls). Ties will be broken by allowing three extra kicks until a winner is determined.
Last year was the ninth annual Soccer Challenge and Wakefield has done well at the state level with at least one state champ in each of the first five years. Last year Wakefield had two state champs (William Townshend and Chris Jennings) and three who finished in second place (Nicole Miller, Liam Cosgrove and Gabrielle White).
