WAKEFIELD — A 53-year-old Wakefield man was arrested and charged with his fifth OUI offense Saturday night.

A caller reported being tailgated on Richardson Street by a white Mercury Mountaineer at about 10:30 p.m. The tailgating reportedly continued on to Main Street, when the driver of the SUV began yelling out the window. The driver of the vehicle being followed turned off Main Street and pulled up in front of the Public Safety Building with the Mountaineer still following.

Upon speaking to both drivers, police arrested John F. Rush Jr. of 52 Nahant St. and charged him with operating under the influence of liquor (fifth offense). Police also found an open bottle of tequila in Rush’s vehicle and he was also charged with the open container violation.

It was a busy weekend for local police.

At about 11 a.m. on Friday a Sunset Drive homeowner reported coming come and finding her garage door open and her grandson’s black mountain bike missing. The resident further stated that she had seen a red pickup truck driving away with a bicycle in the back.

A caller told police at 3:30 p.m. on Friday that a young child was in the middle of Main Street in the downtown area without supervision. A parent of the child reportedly came out of a nearby store and began yelling at the person who called police. The child apparently left in a car driven by a woman. Police planned to file a report with the Department of Children and Families.

An apparent larceny of fruit evidently stemmed from a misunderstanding. A woman reported at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday that a man had entered her Main Street property in Greenwood and took pears from her tree without permission. Employees of the nearby Dockside restaurant told police that the previous owner of the property had allowed them to take pears. The man who took the pears was reportedly a former employee, now a Dockside customer. The manager of the Dockside told the man and all current employees to stay off the property.

Just before 6 p.m. on Friday, an Albion Street woman reported a man with a backpack and wearing a hoodie sitting on her front steps, possibly smoking marijuana. Police were able to locate the man, a Wakefield resident, and arrested him on an outstanding warrant. No marijuana charges were filed.

Police noticed a man passed out in a vehicle parked on Quannapowitt Avenue at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday morning. The man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was transported home by a friend.

At about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, police investigated a report of slashed tires in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Main Street in Greenwood. Officers found six vehicles with slashed tires. Police say they are investigating and have in mind a suspect who may live in the neighborhood.

At about 4 p.m. on Saturday, a group of youths skateboarding on St. Joseph School property were sent on their way.

A caller reported a man down on the sidewalk near Main Street and Wave Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The man eventually got up and was located by police at Main and Central streets. The man was transported to his residence and the custody of his mother.

A suspicious vehicle with the keys inside was reported on Armory Street at about 10 a.m. Sunday morning and turned out to have been stolen out of Woburn. The vehicle was towed and the the owner notified by Woburn PD.

A commuter rail operator reported youths “playing chicken” with the train near Meriam Street at about 3:10 p.m. on Sunday. The youths were gone upon arrival of police.

A 37-year-old Woburn woman will be summonsed to court for unlicensed operation and other violations after her vehicle was stopped on Water Street near Wakefield Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

A police officer was flagged down on Main Street by a pedestrian who reported a man yelling at him near Meriam Street at about 4:30 a.m. this morning. The man was checked out by police and sent on his way.
