WAKEFIELD — The construction season is here for every community in the Commonwealth and after the winter we’ve had, there’s plenty of work to do.
In Wakefield, the DPW is in the first week of a significant upgrade of three of the four thoroughfares surrounding Lake Quannapowitt. On Sunday preliminary grinding work began on North Avenue from Quannapowitt Parkway to Church Street; on Lowell Street from the Route 129 Rotary to Walden Road and on Main Street from Lowell Street to Carriage Lane.
According to DPW Director Richard Stinson last week, the night work included milling the existing surface, repaving, traffic markings and miscellaneous items. After milling the surface, the town’s contractor will adjust roadway structures like gas main and manhole covers; this will be done during the day.
Stinson hopes the three streets will be done by June 20.
Streets scheduled to be paved sometime after July 5 are:
• North Avenue (Church to Broadway)
• Salem Street (Main to Harrison Lane)
• Meriam Street
• Fell Street
• Albion Street (Tuttle Street to Byron)
• Pine Street
These are paving projects only. The DPW also plans to replace some water mains this year on Brook Street and Princess Street, depending on available funds.
Other paving projects include the DPW Yard on North Avenue and the Walton School.
If there is money available, the town will also work on Princess Street, Smith Street and Eustis Avenue, Sweetser Street and Eastern Avenue.
The rebuilding of sewer stations on Plaza Road, Spaulding Street and Lakeview Avenue is also on the 2015 DPW schedule.
J.J. Round Playground might see some upgrades this year too.
All work is weather permitting. If work is delayed due to weather or other circumstances it will be forward one day or until the process is completed, Stinson said.
