WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Warrior Marching Band is concocting a show that will delight and possibly fright for the 2024 competitive season.

This year’s show, called “Mad Scientist,” is set in a lab where the protagonist is mixing up a deadly potion to serve up to unsuspecting victims. “The story is engaging, the colors on the field are bright and the music is intense,” says Director of Visual and Performing Arts Thomas Bankert.

Drum major Nick Wedemeier leads this year’s 73 member marching band. Color guard captains include Natalie Kretas, Kevin Lewis and Serena Loh.

With limited field time due to ongoing construction of the new high school the band had to get creative for their annual summer band camp. The camp typically runs two consecutive weeks in August at Landrigan Field. This year one week was substituted with four days  at an overnight camp in Maine. Bankert says he was impressed with the students’ energy, openness and work ethic. “Comparatively to previous band camps, this year we had 25 less hours of rehearsal than we normally do during the two weeks of camp and got just as much done.”

Band members worked equally hard in the time since collecting a record-breaking 4,749 high-demand items for the Wakefield Food Pantry during their annual food drive last week. This was the Food Pantry’s biggest fundraiser so far this year.

The show “Mad Scientist” will include the songs “Bolero” by  Maurice Ravel; “Danse Macabre” by Camille Saint Saëns and “Toxic” by Britney Spears.

The Wakefield Warrior Marching band will take the field for their first poisonous performance this Saturday at Fred Green Memorial Field in Melrose at 7:55 p.m. during the New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) competition.
