“THE GREATEST AND PRETTIEST Christmas illumination in the history of the town,” was how the Dec. 16, 1940 Daily Item described this downtown light display. Nineteen cables carrying 2,500 colored lights extended from Water Street to the Rockery. Five additional strands spanned Albion Street from Main Street to the Item Building, for a total of 3,000 – 4,000 lights. On the left side of the photo is the old Super A&P Market in the current location of the Dollar Tree store.
