SAUGUS — Talk about tough losses.

After a breathtaking, back and forth battle with the Danvers Falcons, senior co-captain Steve Marino scored what appeared to be the winning goal with 39 seconds remaining during yesterday’s opening game in the Saugus Holiday Tournament at Kasabuski Arena.

For some time after that it looked good for the Warrior icemen. But with about six seconds left in regulation, with goalie in the Falcon net, Danvers had a face off in the Wakefield end. After a scramble, the Falcons pounced on a loose rebound and jammed the puck in with a painful one second left to tie the game at 3-3.

Both teams had their chances in the five minute overtime period but Danvers scored with 30 seconds remaining, dropping the Warriors to 1-3 on the season. They faced Saugus in the tournament consolation game at noon today. Danvers and Lynnfield — a 3-0 winner over Saugus — play in the final.

“It was a tough loss,” said coach Chris Gianatassio. “We went from being really high to being really low in about 30 seconds.”

Marino, a left winger, scored the Warriors’ second and third goals and also assisted on the first goal, scored by senior A.J. Darcy. It was Darcy’s first career Warrior goal and came at 6:10 of the first period. Danvers knotted the score at 1 at 10:10 in the first, where it would remain until Marino scored his first of the game at 10:53 of the second frame.

After the tournament (games go into overtime to try to decide a winner), the Warriors get back to league action Saturday against Stoneham at Kasabuski.
