MELROSE — The Melrose Americans are currently tied for fifth in the Intercity League with a record of 5-4.
The Americans beat the reigning champion Lexington Blue Sox, 3-0, to start the season. Chris Mitchell pitched a complete game shutout for the Americans against Lexington. Mitchell (1.96/25) is currently one of only four pitchers in the ICL to have a sub-two earned run average while pitching more than 20 innings. He is also tied for first in the league with three wins.
The Americans’ offensive attack has been led by Malcolm Nachmanoff and Nick Herzog. Nachmanoff is currently sixth in the ICL with a .391 batting average. He has collected nine hits and seven RBI’s. Nachmanoff had two hits and three RBI’s in a 7-6 victory over the first place Watertown Reds on June 19. Herzog is hitting .346 with nine hits and six runs scored.
The Americans will have three straight home games this Sunday (4 p.m.), Monday (7:30 p.m.), and Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) at Morelli Field in Melrose.
