Albert-Toomey-obit-webMELROSE — Albert J. Toomey passed away at Tufts Medical Center in Boston on Jan. 4. He was 71 years of age.
Albert was born in Cambridge on Aug. 5, 1944 to the late Albert and Dorothy Toomey. He was raised in Everett and graduated from the Everett Vocational School with a degree in electrical. In 1966, Albert joined the U.S. Army and served his country with pride during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1972. After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Toomey started out working at Glendale Hardware in Everett in the 1970s; then as one of the major electricians at Helco Electric in the 1980s and for Lighting Retrofit Services for over 20 years.
Albert has been a resident of Melrose for the past 38 years. He enjoyed photography, fishing and playing poker. Mr. Toomey loved spending time at Davidson’s Campground in Bristol, N.H. for over 15 years. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family around the fire at the campground and riding his Harley Davidson with his wife Mary. Albert had a great sense of humor and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Toomey was the beloved husband of 40 years to Mary L. (Greene) Toomey. He was the devoted father of Angela Vitale and Sean Toomey, both of Melrose. He was the cherished grandfather of Quinn Beckles of Melrose. He was the caring brother of Marie VonDohlen of New Hampshire, Kathy Olsen of Bradford and John Toomey of Woburn. He was the loving brother-in-law of Leo Greene of Melrose and Betsy Mainero of Saugus. He is also survived by his loving and faithful companion Tucci and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose, on Thursday, Jan. 7. Albert’s funeral will held from the Gately Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 8 at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Incarnation Church, 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private.
