NORTH READING — Temperatures were positively balmy last Thursday, for the seventh annual running of the North Reading 5K Turkey Trot and runners responded in kind, with the largest field ever in the history of the race – 1,500 runners, joggers, walkers, kids being pushed in baby carriages and kids running the course on their own, to make this the most successful race ever.

The horde of runners stepped off from Ipswich River Park exactly on time at 8 a.m. for a fun–filled early morning jaunt through the streets of town before returning to the finish line on Chestnut Street. Everyone who ran burned plenty of calories and made room for an extra slice of pie and stuffing at their annual Thanksgiving dinner.

This year’s field of 1,500 bumped right up to the cap set by organizers to keep the race manageable and it was all for a worthy cause, the North Reading High School athletics program. So in a way the real winners are the student–athletes of North Reading.
