Will host the winner of Shawsheen/Northeast first round game in quarters on Thursday

WAKEFIELD — The pairings were announced for the upcoming state tournament in boys’ lacrosse on Friday and that means a first round bye for the Wakefield Memorial High boys’ lacrosse team.

The Warriors (14-4) are seeded second in the 11-team Div. 2 North sectional and won’t begin play until the quarterfinal round which will be on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Landrigan Field. Wakefield, the Middlesex League Freedom division champion, will take on the winner of a first round match-up between Northeast Regional and Shawsheen Valley Tech.

Shawsheen (11-7) is seeded seventh while Northeast (8-6) is ranked 10th. That first round game is scheduled for today at 5 p.m. at Shawsheen Tech.

Also in Div. 2 North field from the M.L. are Burlington and Melrose.

Burlington (11-7) is seeded sixth and the Red Devils will face 11th-ranked Greater Lowell (9-9) in a first round match-up today at 5 p.m. at Burlington High School. The winner will advance and face third-ranked Marblehead (13-6) in a quarterfinal game on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Marblehead.

Melrose (8-8) is seeded eighth and the Red Raiders will host ninth-ranked Dracut (9-9) in a first round contest tonight at 7 p.m. at Melrose High School. The winner of tonight’s first round game will take on top-ranked Beverly (14-6) in quarterfinal game on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Beverly.

The dates, times and venues of the semifinal and final round will be announced.

There are several other M.L. teams in the state tournament as well.

Reading and Lexington are in the 13-team Div. 1 North field.

Reading (18-0) is ranked fourth and the Rockets will face 13th-seeded Salem (7-11) in a first round game tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Reading. The winner will advance to a quarterfinal game on Friday at 5 p.m. where they will face the winner of a first round game tomorrow between fifth-seeded North Andover (15-5) and 12th-ranked Waltham (10-8).

Lexington (9-9) is seeded 10th and the Minutemen will face seventh-ranked Central Catholic (12-8) in a first round game tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Central Catholic. The winner will face second-seeded Billerica (17-4) in a quarterfinal game on Friday at 5 p.m. in Billerica.

Watertown (12-3) is seeded fourth in the 12-team Div. 3 Central/East sectional. The Red Raiders drew a bye for the first round and will host a quarterfinal game on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Watertown. Watertown will face the winner of a first round game today between fifth-ranked Groton-Dunstable (10-8) and 12th-seeded Bellingham (5-15).

Like Div. 2 North, the exact details including the dates, times and venues of the semifinal and final rounds of the Div. 1 North and Div. 3 Central/East Sectionals will be determined later.
