MELROSE — The Melrose Cultural Council announces the award of 25 Local Cultural Council (LCC) grants totaling $9,400 for events and programs that will take place in Melrose during the 2018 calendar year. Thirty-six applications were submitted. The deadline for submission was October 15.

Grants have been awarded to first time applicants, established arts organizations, artists and schools. Events are scheduled in Memorial Hall, the Library, Milano Senior Center, leased and loaned spaces in churches, at parks, and regional theaters. Students in preschools, elementary, middle and high school will benefit from theater and education enrichment, classes and field trips with LCC grant funding.

The Melrose Cultural Council is part of a statewide network supporting community-based projects in the arts, sciences, and humanities. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which then allocates funds to each community. Grant awards are decided by a board of local volunteers who live or work in the community. Current board members are: Jessi Eisdorfer, Arleen Frasca, Sara Gravante, Martha Grover, Eric Heath, Karen Konicek, Kris Rodolico, Dorothy Travis, Luke Miller, Diane Wall, and Mike Zwirko.
