WMHS girls’ track team has good showing at Div. 3 state relays

BURLINGTON — The Wakefield Memorial High girls’ track team has been strong in the distance events and it showed with a third place in the distance medley relay on Saturday at the Div. 3 State Relay meet which was held at Burlington High School.

The distance medley relay team finished third overall and earned the only medal for the Warriors. The team of Jill Raso, Emily Hammond, Sara Custodio and Shannon Quirk combined to run a time of 13:06.50.

Wakefield had some good performances in the meet on Saturday even though the entries didn’t place.

The 4×100 relay team finished 23rd out of 36 teams with a state qualifying time of 53.7 seconds. Allee Purcell, Anna Lucas, Avery Parece and Abby Harrington were on that team.

The Warrior sprint medley was 13th overall out of 25 entries with a time of 4:36.35. Cassie Lucci ran the 800 meter leg getting an individual time of 2:34. That was a PR and earned her a varsity letter. Sam Ross and Anna Lucas ran the 200 meter legs with Purcell running the 400 meter leg.

Wakefield had two hurdle relay teams teams entered in the meet.

The A team finished 10th overall with a time of 1:14.17.  Nicole Galli, Parece, Jill Cataldo and Kaylyn Stewart were the four runners.

The B team finished 15th at 1:22.68. That team consisted of Marissa Hoffman, Meghan Powers, Theresa Fallon and Yvonne Lucas.

Wakefield also had four entries in the field events.

The high jump team was ninth out of 17 teams entered in the event. The trio of Raso, Purcell and Powers jumped a combined height of 13-6 1/3.

The long jump secured 15th overall out of 22 places. Cataldo, Harrington and Stewart were the trio of jumpers and they combined for a distance of 44-3 1/2.

Wakefield also had triple jump team that finished 20th overall with a combined leap of 62-4 1/2. Parece, Sam Ross and Galli were the three jumpers.

The discus relay team took 17th place with a distance of 189-07. Julia Derendal, Samantha Nimblett and Alex Rollins were the trio of throwers.

The javelin team just missed a medal finishing seventh out of 18 teams with a combined throw of 258-04. Derendal, Nicole Amalfitano and Rollins were the throwers.

Wakefield will compete in the Middlesex League championship meet tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at Regis College.
