A FIRE TODAY at about 10 a.m. at the Lakeside Inn on North Avenue drew firefighters and apparatus from Wakefield and surrounding towns including Melrose, Stoneham, Reading and North Reading. The fire appears to have been sparked by plumbing work at the hotel, according to Fire Chief Michael Sullivan, who was at the scene. Preliminary indications were that the fire spread within the walls up to the second floor of the building. One worker at the hotel was transported to the hospital with burns but the severity of the injury was not known. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control fairly quickly, Sullivan said.
