FRAMINGHAM — In a back-and-forth contest, the seventh annual Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Association (MSHCA) Aleppo Shriners All-Star boys’ hockey contest needed overtime to determine a winner at Loring Arena on Saturday, March 26.

Hanover’s Landon Hasenfuss took a pass from Frank Cosolito of Catholic Memorial during the 3-on-3 overtime and scored to give the South a 4-3 win over the North.

Wakefield senior forward Anthony Funicella represented the Warriors by being named to the North roster. The top 48 seniors from the entire state were selected to the teams, 24 each for the North and South. So it was quite an honor for Funicella to be chosen.

Hingham goalie Matthew Personeni made 10 saves on 12 shots in the third period and overtime, including a huge glove save 30 seconds prior that probably won him the MVP trophy.

In the third period, the North struck with 6:27 left to tie the score 2-2 on a goal from Malden Catholic’s Nicholas Botticelli. The South answered two minutes later through Duxbury’s Kevin Corcoran before a tally from Dylan Poirier of Lowell Catholic with 1:48 left forced overtime.

The South was up 1-0 after at 2:22 of the first period on a tally by Michael Pyne of Bridgewater-Raynham. The North tied it up on an unassisted goal from Waltham’s Peter Simeone just 1:06 into the second frame.

Framingham’s Tyler Anes gave the lead back to the South with 7:56 left in the second period from Cosolito’s first assist.

In the MSHCA Aleppo Shriners All-Star girls’ hockey game, Arlington Catholic senior Michaela McLaughlin put home a loose puck amongst a scrum with 45 seconds remaining to give the North a 2-1 win over the South.

South goalie Michaela Kane didn’t see the puck on McLaughlin’s goal. McLaughlin was named the game MVP.

After being out-played through two periods but trailing only 1-0, the North came out to play in the third. Kathleen LeFebre of Methuen tied the score two minutes in.

Emma Crocker of Archbishop Williams scored the South goal with 11:37 to go in the second period. Shea Kearney from Cohasset led the team in saves with six. Austin Prep’s Caty Flagg led the North with eight stops.
