Warriors sweep Melrose with 5-0 shutout

WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Memorial girls’ tennis team is attempting to make a late season run once again in the hopes of clinching a state tournament berth. On Thursday afternoon, the Warriors took care of business by sweeping rival Melrose with a 5-0 shutout at the Dobbins Courts.

The Warriors increased their record to 5-7 on the season and need three victories in their final four matches to get into the postseason for the fourth straight spring.

At first singles, senior captain Abby Chapman defeated Olivia Zibatis, 7-5, 6-2.

Haley Tanner, a junior, pulled out a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Julia McLaughlin at second singles.

At third singles, senior captain Jenna Mello faced Emma Bates and prevailed by a 6-2, 6-3 tally.

Juniors Laura McGovern and Olivia Dziadyk were teamed at first doubles and they took on the Red Raider tandem of Katherine and Colleen Denning. McGovern and Dziadyk posted a 6-2, 6-3 triumph.

At second doubles, Emily Roberts and Kelsey Callahan, both juniors, squared off against Annie Cavanaugh and Maeve McGillacudy. Roberts and Callahan won, 6-3, 6-4.

The Warriors are scheduled to face Burlington this afternoon (weather permitting) at 3:45 p.m. at Rahanis Park.
