Cruise to easy triumph over Stoneham

STONEHAM — Both the Wakefield Memorial High and Stoneham High golf teams call the Bear Hill Golf Club home and both squads are quite familiar with the course. So having home course advantage really didn’t come into play for either the Warriors or Spartans yesterday afternoon.

Wakefield just proved it was a better team as it posted a 44.5-27.5 triumph over Stoneham to increase its overall record to 9-4 and 6-4 in the Middlesex League Freedom division.

The Warriors won five of the eight individual matches and halved two others. Wakefield dropped only one match and that was close as well.

At numbers one and two, juniors David Melanson and Mike Guanci halved their matches against two very good Spartan golfers.

Dylan Melanson, a senior co-captain, is currently on a hot streak and he pulled out a 6-3 victory over his foe at the third spot.

At four, Tim Hurley prevailed by a 5-4 tally.

The Warriors received very strong play at numbers five and six and won both contests decisively. At five, Austin Collard, a junior, won 7-2. At six, senior co-captain Steven Melanson triumphed by an 8-1 score.

“Steven Melanson has made a big difference for us in the last three matches,” said Coach Dennis Bisso.

Kevin Murray, a senior, played at number seven and he continued to be very consistent. Murray won a 5.5-3.5 score.

At eight, senior Stephen Marino was edged by a 5-4 score.

“We continue to play well,” said Bisso. “Stoneham is an improved team.”

At the two alternate matches, sophomore John Evangelista halved his contest at nine, 4.5-4.5, while junior Justin Sullivan lost his contest at 10, 5.5-3.5.

Wakefield has a makeup against Lexington this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Thomson Country Club to conclude the regular season.
