James-Cohen-obit-webBURLINGTON — James S. Cohen passed away at Lahey Hospital in Burlington on Feb. 8, 2016. He was 81 years of age.

James was born in Boston on Aug. 30, 1934 to the late Ira and Arlene (Akers) Cohen. She was raised in Allston and Dorchester and graduated from Boston Trade School. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for the Congregational Retirement Homes in Melrose for over 20 years and had previously worked in sales and had owned the Domestic Care Company.

Jim loved fishing fresh water and saltwater and enjoyed traveling to the Cape Cod Canal and Plum Island early in the morning for striper fishing. Mr. Cohen loved the outdoors and going to his camp in North Berwick, Maine with his buddies. He always had a project going, enjoyed working around his home but, most of all, he loved spending time with his “Doll.”

James was the beloved husband of 30 years to Dolores C. (Salvatore) DeChristopher Cohen. He was the loving father of Jeffrey Cohen and his wife Nancy of Rowley and the late James S. Cohen Jr. He was the caring stepfather of Susan Davis of Gloucester, Frank DeChristopher Jr. of Andover, John DeChristopher of Scituate and Matthew DeChristopher of North Reading. He was the brother of Dorothea Cohen and the late George and Harold Cohen. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose on Friday, Feb. 12 from 10 a.m.-noon., with a funeral service at noontime. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private.
