US Marine Corps veteran

MELROSE — James H. Otis Jr., of Melrose, passed away on Sunday, May 5 surrounded by those he loved. He was 89. Born in Melrose on June 19, 1934, Jim was one of three children of the late James H. and Mary (Switzler) Otis, Sr.

Jim grew up in Melrose and his journey was marked by integrity and achievement. He graduated from New Hampton Prep School before earning his bachelor’s degree from Boston University and two master’s degrees in Aeronautical Engineering from Northeastern University. He started with NASA and then found his way to Textron where he spent most of his career. Jim was very proud of his contributions to aviation and space exploration.

A family man first, Jim was exceptionally active in the lives of his family and time spent together was precious. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him much joy.  
Jim was a man of many talents and passions. He served in the Marine Corps Reserves, enjoyed annual trips to Bar Harbor with his wife, traveling through Europe and loved spending time on Ossipee Lake with his children, playing golf, camping and fishing. Whether strumming on his guitar and keyboard, crafting beautiful pieces out of wood or writing songs, James had a true zest for life.
Jim was the loving husband of the late Margaret P. (Bridges) Otis, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. Devoted father of James H. Otis and his wife Lois of Malden; Stephen L. Otis of Melrose; Judith L. Otis of Salem, NH; and Melissa A. Bodvar and her late husband Carl of Melrose. Loving brother the late Virginia Williams and her surviving husband Tim and the late Elizabeth Huntress and her late husband William. Proud grandfather of Brittany; Amy and her husband Bill; William; Margaret and her husband Jacob; and Hannah Jamie who shared the same birthday as Jim. Cherished great grandfather of Lana and Ciaran.
